Meet the New Zealand All-Rounder Rachin Ravindra with Indian Roots Who Shine Against England in the World Cup Opener.

Rachin Ravindra, a left-handed batsman and spin bowler, was born in Wellington on November 18, 1999, to Indian parents. He emerged as a surprise star in the ICC World Cup 2023’s opening match, where New Zealand took control against defending champions England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ravindra smashed his first ODI century off just 82 balls and crucially dismissed Harry Brook, helping New Zealand limit England to 282 for 9 after winning the toss and choosing to bowl at Motera.

At 23 years old, he became the youngest centurion for New Zealand in ODI World Cup history with his dazzling performance.

Though he has played just 13 ODIs, Ravindra has already demonstrated his talent and maturity in a short time. Effective with both bat and ball, Ravindra is undoubtedly one of the players to watch in this World Cup, held in his native country, India.

“My parents hail from Bangalore, and it’s incredible to play a World Cup here,” Ravindra mentioned in a recent interview.

Rachin Ravindra was born to Indian parents in Wellington on November 18, 1999. He marked his Test debut against India in Kanpur a couple of years ago.

His dad, Ravi Krishnamurthy, who works as a software architect, used to engage in club-level cricket back in his hometown of Bangalore before eventually relocating to New Zealand.

He is also the grandson of Dr. T.A. Balakrishna Adiga, a notable biology faculty member who taught at Vijaya College, Bangalore, and at BASE, Basavanagudi.

Rachin shares a strong connection with the cricket-crazy nation, thanks to his family’s roots in Bengaluru. Interestingly, his father named him after cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

From cheering for New Zealand in a Bengaluru bar during the 2019 World Cup final to being a part of CWC23, Rachin Ravindra’s journey has been quite remarkable.

The Indian Connection:

“It’s quite a story, actually. My dad takes a group of young cricketers to India annually, and we were in Bangalore on a senior trip. We watched the final (2019) in a stock exchange bar.

“I watched the entire final. It was truly remarkable, a real rollercoaster of an experience with the ups and downs of the game. Having Indian fans in our midst was quite enjoyable. It’s an experience I will never forget,” shared Ravindra with PTI.

Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand scores a century in his ODI World Cup debut against England.
